一直以為這首感人的詩出自大文豪泰戈爾手筆，當初在張小嫻的小說裡讀到這句“世上最遙遠的距離，不是生與死的距離，不是天各一方，而是我就站在你面前，你卻不知道我愛你。” 一種無以名狀的触動...久久不能釋懷。也一直以為是張小嫻引用泰戈爾的詩並以加工。謝謝Willy的指正，才從網絡上搜索相關的資料，證明此詩作者是張小嫻。現將張小嫻對此詩的說明及英文版（不知為誰所譯）並列如下：

世上最遙遠的距離（再版序）  

   這部小說是我在一九九七年五月完成的。這是一個關於暗戀的故事。女主角蘇盈苦苦地暗戀著秦雲生。雲生雖然最後接受了他，但他心裏思念的，他最愛的，始終是一個逝去的情人。蘇盈傷心地說：  

   “世上最遙遠的距離，不是生與死的距離，不是天各一方，而是我就站在你面前，你卻不知道我愛你。”  

   最遙遠的距離，是你心裏沒有我。  

   去年，我收到兩封電子郵件，那兩個女孩子說：“‘世上最遙遠的距 離……’這一句，原來不是你寫的，是印度詩人泰戈爾寫的。”我看了覺得很奇怪，明明是我寫的，為什麼會變成泰戈爾的詩？  

   今年二月，我去了臺灣一趟，這才知道“世上最遙遠的距離……”這段文字去年十二月在臺灣很流行，一群陽明山醫學院的醫科生把我的句子延續下去，寫了一首很有趣的詩，當在臺灣的bbs網路上。自此以後，看到這段文字的人愈來愈多；於是有人流傳，這其實是出自泰戈爾的《漂鳥集》。

   許多廣告用了這段文字，電視問答遊戲的主持人也問參加者“泰戈爾說，世上最遙遠的距離……下一句什麼？”一位知名女作家在接受訪問時，也歎息：“泰戈爾說，世上最遙遠的距離……”她並且把這段文字收到她自己的書裏。  

別人都以為我是抄泰戈爾，只有我和我的出版社知道我沒有抄，這真是世上最遙遠的距離。  

   幸好，後來有一位喜歡我書的臺灣讀者到圖書館翻查了所有的泰戈爾的書，證實泰戈爾從來沒有寫過這麼一首詩。這位元讀者在bbs網路上替我平反了。  

這段文字在臺灣忽然鬧得熱烘烘，引起那麼多的共鳴，也許是因為我們或多或少都暗戀過別人，也被人暗戀過吧？  

   不曾苦苦暗戀過的人，不會理解暗戀的蒼涼。總會有人自豪地說：“我從來沒有暗戀過別人！”我們太知道了，暗戀是卑微的，我們不敢承認。因此，我也會說，我從來沒有暗戀過別人。
